چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Any foramen in the buccal surface of mandibular body that transfers mental nerve and vessels except mental foramen, is called Accessory Mental Foramen (AMF). The objective of this study was the determination of the AMF using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods:  this descriptive study was done on 180 CBCT projections which were selected by convenience sampling method. The AMF was tested in tangential and cross-sectional planes which had relation with inferior alveolar canal in the cross-sectional plane and opened on the buccal surface of mandible r. The location of AMF was assessed in eight regions (posterior-superior, posterior, posterior-inferior, superior, inferior, posterior-anterior, anterior and superior-anterior) by using reconstructed 3D CBCT or tangential images, . Descriptive analysis was used to compare the presence of AMF based on sex and age on each side. Results: The incidence rate of AMF was 3.3 % and 5.6 % in the right and left sides, respectively. There were two image samples (1.1%) with AMF in both sides. There was no significant difference between the presence of AMF and gender (right side P-value =0.42; left side P-value =0.73) and age (right side P-value =0.30; left side P-value =0.32). Conclusion: there were variations in the incidence and location of the AMF; therefore, CBCT can be an effective tool for 3 pre-surgical assessment of AMF.

Accessory mental foramen: A rare anatomical variation detected by cone-beam computed tomography

The mental foramen is a bilateral opening in the vestibular portion of the mandible through which nerve endings, such as the mental nerve, emerge. In general, the mental foramen is located between the lower premolars. This region is a common area for the placement of dental implants. It is very important to identify anatomical variations in presurgical imaging exams since damage to neurovascula...

Undetected Small Accessory Mental Foramina Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

INTRODUCTION The accessory foramina could not be identified on some imaging modalities such as surface-rendered images. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of surface-rendered images in detecting these foramina. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed 20 accessory mental foramina (AMF) in nine mandibles removed from cadavers with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and assesse...

Anatomic Relationship between Mental Foramen and Peripheral Structures Observed By Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

The mental foramen (MF) is a funnel-like opening located on the lateral aspect of the mandible. It is an important anatomical landmark through which the inferior alveolar nerve and vessel bundles pass. Once the nerve leaves the MF, it branches to innervate the anterior teeth and neighboring structures. The blood vessels supply the soft tissues of the lower jaw. Surgeons must establish the posit...

Assessment of the inferior mandibular canal’s position by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Abstract Objectives: It is important to know the exact location and anatomic variety of inferior alveolar nerve canal for different procedures of mandibular surgeries. The aim of the present study was to evaluate inferior mandibular canal’s anatomic position by Cone-beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Methods: In a cross sectional study, CBCT were taken and assessed from 130 patients (...

Predictive factors of the dimensions and location of mental foramen using cone beam computed tomography

OBJECTIVE The mental foramen (MF) hosts main neurovascular structures, making it of crucial importance for surgical procedures. This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing the dimensions and location of the MF. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 344 patients were examined for MF dimensions, as well as for the distances from the MF to the alveolar crest...
